Our son woke up with a stuffy nose this morning. We made it 5 weeks into the school year before it happened — and honestly that is a win in my book. Being in Kindergarten I think I was bracing for the fa
ct we’d only make it a week or two before those new class, more people germs hit their systems hard. Thankfully that wasn’t the case.
This week we got back from camping (read my post about all of that here) and with the temperature in this flux of hotter afternoons, but fairly chilly mornings our attire and our activities are all over the place. Combine that with the fact our son has Martial Arts Thursday nights and is awoken far earlier than he would like on Friday morning and he was headed for a crash course.
With all the change up, all the weather flux, all the start of extracurriculars for the fall we are setting our kids up for the ups and downs of their immune system especially ones like mine who leveled up to a new school this year with more responsibility and more activities.
Last year, my kids had one day each out of school for being sick – ONE – and a lot of people asked me how I did it.
I’ve posted several times about my all time favorite, I swear by them, vitamins but there is more to how I keep my kids moving and grooving through the school year and through our life:
RECIPE FOR HEALTHY KIDS
- Yes, the vitamins. I’ll link them here again, but I typically give my kids a tablespoon every other day.
Mary Ruth Organics 7 in 1 Immunity - Organic hand sanitizer, do sometimes we reach for the purell because it’s simple and largely available, yes, but we try more-so to use the clean ingredient, organic cleansers to keep them healthy and safe!
Honest Company Hand Sanitizer
Everybody Hand Sanitizer (they have a lavender scent as well but due to the studies I’ve seen on lavender potentially affecting testosterone I steer clear of it in the majority of things) - Keep them active.
My kids walk probably more than they would like, although this summer popsicles are largely helpful for the after dinner walk. They get exposed to the changing temperatures every chance we get and if we aren’t walking we are on our bikes now that they finally dropped the training wheels and are having the time of their lives. - Keep them in community.
They see at least a handful of their friends apart from school every single day. Kids of different ages, bringing in different things and different times, it allows their immune system to bolster to the influx of pathogens headed towards them. Environment makes a difference and while it has caused us to crash in the past for bigger things (like stomach bugs) but you can’t convince me otherwise that the rhythmic nature of our community and our opt outside mentality doesn’t bolster their ability to fight off infection.
And I have largely theorized that because of the complete difference in our kids biology they aren’t supporting each other in the development of their defense due to the different ways they respond and fight off a myriad of pathogens.
The one things we will make sure to do this year — flu shots. While I’ve always been lackadaisical about whether we do or we don’t get them (although in the year we adopted our daughter it was mandatory for all of them), after the way it hit our family last year we can’t take that risk again. It was scary and the repercussions lasted for months. I’m not recommending it for every family, but our family will be getting them this year as long as they are available.
Now, we can enjoy the changing season, the changing temperatures, and the great outdoors together with the people we love because we try to put ourselves in the best spot possible with our health.
Happy fall ya’ll!
